Basic rules for great photography

Before you dive into your camera settings, understanding some fundamental photography guidelines can quickly improve your images.

Rule of thirds

The rule of thirds helps you create a balanced composition by imagining a three-by-three grid overlaying the frame. Key parts of the photo should be placed along the two horizontal and two vertical lines, or at the intersection point of these lines.

Think about space

Depending on the mood you want to create or the subject you want to focus on in your photo, you should consider the use of negative space.

Look for symmetry and patterns

Again, looking for groups of three, symmetrical shapes or a frame within a frame can help you create a more balanced, interesting composition.

Test different viewpoints

The easiest and quickest way to shoot is straight on at eye level.

Manage lighting

This isn’t always possible if you’re shooting outdoors. However, returning to the same landscape at different times of day or year can create different effects from the same shot. If you can, try to shoot outdoors during the golden hours (an hour after sunrise and before sunset) on clear sunny days to get the warmest, softest light.

Take multiple shots

The more photos you take, the more likely you’ll capture the perfect frame. So, all you need to do is select your favourite image.

Phone settings for better photos

Now you’re acing your photo compositions, here are some tips on adjusting your smartphone camera settings for even better results.
